Improv, My Happy Place

If I could turn back time and tell my child self that one day I will embrace my weirdness wholly AND with many other people who are just like me; I would be in absolute disbelief!

Why? Because I felt like a lone weird wolf. If I spoke or acted out what was on my mind, I would be told to stop, teased, or belittled.

Over time, I have slowly learned when to bring out my true self and how to do it in a way that doesn’t scare people off lol. However the biggest “it’s ok to be weird” came when my mom gave me a birthday card for my 29th birthday. Somehow Carlton Cards captured the exact right words I needed to read, and words I know my mom struggled to say:

If ever there was someone who danced to her own beat, Daughter it’s you.

You don’t follow the crowd, you follow your heart.

And that’s a beautiful thing - because the world needs more sweet, funny, smart, true originals like you.

This year, hope your heart leads you to happy places, smiling faces, and dreams-come-true.

If only my mom knew that card helped lead me to happy places, smiling faces AND dreams-come-true for many years to come.

After the covid pandemic that shut down the world for years, I joined Chilliwack Improv. There, I met my TWINS! They are all so accepting of each other and we feel comfortable to express ourselves. I truly feel that my true self is not only accepted but appreciated by my troop.

I am a firm believer that it takes a village to get through life. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. We need to band together to thrive and with this troop/friends, I think we do. On stage we balance each other out. The village consists of our Directors, Dan, Josh & Scott, along with the constantly learning minions, Elaine, Darren, Krystal, Mark, Margaret, Carolyn, and me.

They all bring something wonderful to the stage creating such Improv magic.

Of course the best part of improv is performing to our fantastic audience! When the room is full of amazing people like yourself, the vibe is gloriously electric for everyone. The suggestions we get from the crowd always keeps us on our toes. The laughs are what any insecure girl needs to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Thank you audience lovelies, you make the show worth all the pre-show nerves and sweaty palms!

Of course, the magic could not be made without it’s castle. Cowork Studio C has been an amazing venue to host our shows and until recently, practice our craft. It has a great stage to perform on, comfortable welcoming space for the audience, and awesome technology (if you are a nerd for sound and audio, you really need to come to StudioC for that alone).

Please come watch our show and get us into trouble with your suggestions. Our next show is Nov 29, 2024. Get tickets here (tickets are selling fast)

PS…if Josh’s eyeballs bulge…you got a pro-improver into trouble tee hee.

PPS. If you want to try improv, there is Improv Hangouts. They are a lot of fun with great people too.
